Why We Buy the Wrong Swimsuit AND How to Choose One That Actually Works

Most of us can admit it, we have bought the wrong swimsuit at some point. Not because we made a bad choice, or because our body was difficult or that we failed to understand fashion. Usually, it happens because we were asking the swimsuit to do the wrong job.

We get sucked in by the colour we love, the shape we think we should wear, the style that looks beautiful on gorgeous catalogue model, or the swimsuit that feels safest. Then we try it on, realise it does not quite work for our body, our bust, our plans or the way we actually spend time by the water. Immediately buyers remorse.

The truth is, the best swimsuit is rarely just the prettiest swimsuit, it’s the one that supports you properly, suits your proportions, works for the way you want to wear it, and helps you feel like yourself.

At Siren + Sage, we think that starts with changing the way we shop for swimwear.

We shop by appearance first

Swimwear is emotional. We are drawn to colour, print, cut and the feeling of a vacation we have not taken yet. That is a completely natural feeling and a swimsuit is not just a practical item, its massively tied to confidence, exciting travel plans, summer sunshine, body image and the version of ourselves we want to feel when we wear it.

The problem is that appearance alone does not tell you whether a swimsuit will work. A beautiful swimsuit can still be wrong for you if it doesn’t support your bust, fit your torso, sit comfortably at the waist or move with your body. That doesn’t mean style shouldn’t matter. It absolutely should, but style works best when it is built on good fit.

A swimsuit should look good because it works with your body, not because you are trying to make your body work for the swimsuit.

We forget about bust support

One of the biggest reasons people buy the wrong swimsuit is that they underestimate how much support they need. This is especially true for D cup busts and up.

Many swimsuits are sized small, medium or large, which can make sense for the body of the suit, but it often does not give enough precision through the bust. If your bikini top or swimsuit does not support properly, the whole fit can feel and potentially look wrong.

The bust may sit lower than you want. The neckline may not feel secure. The straps may dig. You may feel like you are constantly adjusting yourself rather than relaxing. All of that can also knock your confidence.

That is why bra-sized swimwear can make such a difference. A supportive bikini top is not just about cup size. It affects posture, proportion, comfort and confidence. It can change how the entire swim look feels on the body.

If you usually wear a bra with a specific cup and band size, it makes sense that your swimwear might need the same level of thought.

We choose the swimsuit before thinking about body proportions

Another common mistake is buying swimwear without thinking about proportion. Two people can wear the same clothing size and need completely different swimsuit shapes. One may have a short torso, another a long torso. One may need more bust support, another may want more coverage through the hips. One may love a high-waisted bottom, while another finds it sits too high on the body.

If you have a short torso, some one-piece swimsuits may bunch through the middle or make the body feel more compact. If you have a long torso, a one-piece may pull at the shoulders, ride up or feel too short through the body.

Neither issue is about your body being wrong. It is about the swimsuit being designed around a different set of proportions. The more you understand your own proportions, the easier it becomes to choose swimwear that actually feels good.

We expect one swimsuit to do everything

A traditional one-piece has a difficult job. It has to support the bust, fit the torso, shape the waist, cover the body, sit comfortably at the hips and move with you. That is a lot to ask from one garment. Do you ask the same of any of your other clothing hiding in the closet?

Sometimes it works beautifully. But sometimes one part fits and another part does not. This is one of the reasons layered swimwear can be so useful. Instead of expecting one swimsuit to do everything, you can build the look in pieces.

A bra-sized bikini top gives support. A bikini bottom gives flexibility through the waist and hips. An OverKini™ adds coverage, shape and the look of a one-piece. A swim sarong or wrap skirt gives you another layer for resort styling or more coverage beyond the pool.

Each piece has a purpose which means you are not forcing one swimsuit to solve every fit and styling problem at once.

We do not think about how we will actually wear it

Another reason we buy the wrong swimsuit is that we shop for the fantasy, not the day. We imagine the pool, sandy beaches, the colour against our tan and that perfect picture for social media.

But we do not always think about what we will actually be doing. Will you be swimming properly? Walking along the beach? Chasing children? Paddleboarding? Surfing? Sitting down for lunch? Packing light for a resort trip? Wearing the swimsuit under a shirt or wrap skirt? Moving from poolside to dinner? OK, the list can be endless.

A swimsuit that works for lying by the pool may not be the one you want for an active beach day. A bikini that looks beautiful in a mirror may not feel secure when you are walking, swimming or travelling. A one-piece may look polished, but if it offers no bust support, you may not reach for it as often as you thought.

The best swimsuit is the one that fits your real life, not just your holiday mood board.

So, how do you choose the right swimsuit?

Start with how you want to feel and then think about what you need the swimsuit to do.

Ask yourself:

  • Do I need proper bust support?
  • Do I prefer a bikini, one-piece or layered swimwear?
  • Do I have a short torso, long torso or proportions that make standard swimsuits tricky?
  • Do I want more coverage, more flexibility or both?
  • Will I be swimming, lounging, travelling or styling this beyond the pool?
  • Do I want pieces I can mix, match and re-wear in different ways?

These questions are more useful than asking, “What swimsuit should I wear for my body type?”. Your body type matters, but your comfort, support needs and lifestyle matter too.

Swimwear should work with you

Buying the wrong swimsuit is rarely about choosing badly. It’s usually about being offered too few options. For too long, swimwear has asked women to choose between support and style, coverage and confidence, one-piece and bikini, practical and beautiful.

At Siren + Sage, we do not think those should be separate choices.

Our Layered Swim System was designed to give you more flexibility: bra-sized bikini tops for support, OverKini™ styles for coverage and shape, and resort layers to help you style your swimwear beyond the beach.

Because the right swimsuit is not just the one that looks good in a product photo.

It is the one that supports your body, suits your proportions, works for your plans and makes you feel confident enough to enjoy the moment you bought it for.
